With the help of some very generous individual donors, organizations, schools, and foundations from several counties, Mohican Outdoor School purchased 210 acres in Richland County, Ohio, to develop a site for outdoor education and environmental learning (also please see more information on Hemlock Falls property). The new facility has been designed to complement the program and curriculum -- a place where people of all ages can come, learn about the natural environment, and evaluate ways to live lightly on the land.

The new site has buildings designed with programming in mind, rather than adjusting the program to meet the limitations of the buildings. The site is open year-round, and adults as well a children are able to participate in a variety of programs. The site allows Mohican School to manage creative approaches to nutritional food and to be environmentally innovative. Plans call for investigating the use of geothermal heating, self-composting toilets, solar heat, organic gardening, a dining room greenhouse, composting and recycling, to name a few. We are on the cutting edge of what's happening in outdoor education in the United States!

All facilities are working models of sustainable architecture with earth-friendly components and energy and resource conservation. Buildings are creations of spaces which provide comfort while while delightfully engaging the imaginations of children.

Shelter House - This unique building is an apt point of entry for visitors. Functionally it provides dry shelter for luggage, equipment, and people. It will have two wood-fired baking and smoking ovens for outdoor cooking. It esthetically blends with its natural surroundings and is an exciting demonstration of timber-frame construction with locally harvested building materials.

Visiting Teachers' Quarters - This warm and inviting structure contains six semi-private rooms, each with desk storage and sink. A kitchenette can be used for informal dining and a sitting area for quite and comfortable evenings in front of a woodburning stove. Separate and complete bathrooms have water conservation features. Cozy radiant heat will be in each room as well as geothermal vented cooling during the warm months.

Dining Room/ Lodge - With its panoramic view and soothing acoustics, the lodge's dining room is nestled in Ohio's unique Black Hand sandstone area overlooking the ancient Groveport River bed. It includes two seating areas with 150 capacity each and a fully equipped modern kitchen. Warm and inviting radiant heat keeps occupants cozy in the winter and geothermal venting keeps them cool in the summer. The ground floor of the lodge has a recreation area and library for the students. It also includes two stores, one for students, and one for adults.

Student Dormitories - The living quarters for the students reflect the first hand learning of 40 years of operational and supervision experience. Its architectural material and spaces are focused on creating the most welcome and comforting aspects of a home away from home. Total capacity will be 165.

Mohican has benefited from ongoing community support through the years. Our achievements would not have been possible without the cooperation we've received from all the people involved. Creating a site of our own to help give every person an equal opportunity to experience learning in a wide variety of environments is our objective. We offer an extensive field trip program and Summer Day Camp at the Hemlock Falls facility, as well as many year-round events open to the public at the ELC site. In addition, our buildings are available for rental to host your group activities. Our goal is to make people aware of their surroundings and teach them to become valued members of our global community. These ideas may seem far-reaching, but we feel confident that with the help of our friends, we can make this dream a reality for the "Next of the Mohicans"

You are invited to share in the dream . . . call Mohican School for more information (419) 938-6671.
