MOHICAN OUTDOOR SCHOOL FIELD TRIP PROGRAM

    Be a part of history at Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors, Inc. by scheduling a field trip at the Hemlock Falls Field Trip Center. Opened in September 1996 and built primarily for field trips, the facility has the capacity for 70 students plus adults. Mohican Outdoor School is a curriculum enrichment education center located in north central Ohio. In operation since 1961, it has served over 200,000 students. Currently, over 85 school districts in Ohio send students to Mohican for its resident outdoor education program

    In addition to our successful resident program, we offer field trips consisting of outdoor education activities geared to fit the season. An exciting future awaits all of us connected with Mohican School! The choices below are good for all seasons of the year! Other topics may be possible - call and ask!     (1) Aquatic Studies - Visit a creek, a pond, or wetlands to learn about these wonderful habitats! Collect and display data to support how an organism's patterns of behavior relate to the nature of that organism's ecosystem.

    (2) Woods, Fields & Streams -A comprehensive view of various plant types and the environments in which they thrive. Mohican properly includes fields, a pine forest, beech-maple forest and streams. Investigate and discover the great diversity among organisms and how they interact with one another.

    (3) Compass Challenge - Learn to use a compass, your pace and your brains to compete against other teams on the compass course.

    (4) Survival - Participants will learn what it takes to survive in the woods! Learn about basic survival needs and build a shelter in the forest.

    (5) Birds - Join us on a bird hike and learn more about migratory and permanent resident birds. Study live birds and learn why we band them for scientific research at one of our federal bird banding stations

    (6) Entomology - Take the "UG!" out of bug and turn it into an "AH!" Collect insects to learn more about this fascinating subject.

    (7) Tree Identification - A dichotomous key will be used to identify several tree species common to our area. Learn about pioneer and modern uses of trees in Ohio.

    (8) Geology - Explore Hemlock Falls and see Blackhand sandstone formed 350 million years ago! Learn how to use rock picks and safety goggles. Observe rocks and minerals through a hand lens.Try out the Mhos scale of hardness on rocks you collect.

    (9) Living History -Take a walk through time and explore Ohio during the early 1800's. Meet characters from the past who helped shape Ohio.                   .

    (10) Ecology -Food chain and food web activities will spotlight the relationships found within living communities. An exploration hike will identify different ecosystems and the living organisms found within them.
     
     



    More Important Information - Your group can arrive any time after 10.00 a.m. and leave any time before 2:00 p.m. For groups of school age students, two adults must accompany them the entire day. A car accompanying the group is helpful.

    What to Bring - Dress for the season and plan to be outside most of the day. Bring sturdy shoes or boots, rain gear and several layers of clothing. Be prepared for any weather!  Please keep in mind that we are an "outdoor" school and we want you to be comfortable, however, shorts and sandals should not be worn. Bring a sack lunch, drink, water bottle or plastic cup, name tag, pencil and paper. A pop machine is available - bring 50¢ in change. The Outdoor Souvenir Store is also available.

    How to Plan for Your Group - The staff at Mohican is quite diverse and capable of providing an educational and enjoyable program on a wide variety of outdoor and environmental subjects. If you have specific interests - ask us! Adult groups are welcome.

    Please fill out the registration form below and return it as soon as possible because we do schedule on a first come first served basis. All efforts will be made to give you your first choice of dates. After confirmation of a field trip date, you will be mailed an invoice, insurance form, map and Mohican Outdoor School Parental Permission/Medical Forms for each student. Mohican School must keep the medical forms on file for insurance purposes. School age participants will be covered by a $100.00 deductible accident insurance policy. Parental permission slips are required. 911 emergency care is available. A Life Flight helicopter landing site is planned for next to the field trip center as a service to the community and school.
