How you can help MOS preserve the Hemlock Falls Property . . .
The purchase of 178 acres of land surrounding (but not including the Falls property itself) and the construction of the Field Trip Center has allowed groups of all ages to enjoy programming in this unique area year round. In November of 1998, a donation from a generous individual allowed the purchase of 10 additional acres to protect the southern edge of the Falls, and included a garage which can be used as a maintenance building.
In April of 1999, the 22 acre Falls property that had previously been leased yearly was purchased for $100,000 thanks to many generous organizations and individuals. Ron Reed, Executive Director of Mohican Outdoor School stated, "This purchase is the keystone for our outdoor environmental education program. The ability to use the area for education purposes will provide meaningful lessons for students of all generations. In addition, Hemlock Falls will be preserved for future generations for study and appreciate." In keeping with the wishes of former owners Mr. and Mrs. Commodore Johnson and the mission of Mohican School, a conservation easement has been established with the North Central Ohio Land Conservancy insuring the preservation of Hemlock Falls forever. This easement includes the 22 acre Falls area plus an additional 33 surrounding acres providing a 55 acres area which will never be developed and will be preserved for generations to come.
